Rx Ballroom Dance Featured on Spectrum News 1: Dancing Through Neurodegenerative Diseases
We are thrilled to share that Rx Ballroom Dance has been featured on Spectrum News 1, highlighting our mission to support individuals living with neurodegenerative diseases through the transformative power of ballroom dance.
Founded in 2019 by former professional ballroom dancer and special education teacher Erin Angelo, Rx Ballroom Dance offers free 45-minute classes tailored for individuals with conditions such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The program has grown to 12 locations, offering 17 classes weekly, all led by certified instructors trained to work with this community.
One of our dedicated participants, 79-year-old Darlene Duffield, shared her journey with Spectrum News. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2015, Darlene began attending our classes three years ago. Initially struggling with balance and dizziness, she now dances with confidence and has not experienced a fall in three years. “My balance is definitely better. I don’t feel like I’m going to fall all the time,” Darlene remarked.
Medical professionals, including Dr. Johnson Moon from Providence St. Jude Medical Center, emphasize the benefits of movement for those with neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Moon notes that exercise not only alleviates symptoms but can also slow disease progression by reactivating parts of the brain and nervous system.
Our classes are made possible through a combination of state funding, private foundations, and generous donors. To continue offering these life-enhancing programs, we invite you to support our upcoming event.
Join us for the Defying Limits Gala on May 10 at Dance Daly Mission Viejo, where participants like Darlene will showcase their progress and passion. This fundraising event is crucial for sustaining our free classes and expanding our reach.
